Thousands of Sensitive NSW Court Documents Exposed in Major Data Breach

A significant data breach has occurred affecting the New South Wales Online Registry website, leading to the unauthorized download of thousands of sensitive court documents. The website, a crucial platform for online court services in New South Wales (Australia), caters to the Supreme Court, District Court, and Local Court, and is managed by the state’s Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ).

Police Investigate “Major Data Breach”

The NSW Police were alerted to this serious incident on Tuesday and have launched a dedicated investigation, codenamed ‘Strike Force Pardey’, to understand the full scope and impact of the breach.  

“[We] are working closely with DCJ in order to contain the breach after approximately 9000 sensitive court files, including apprehended violence orders and affidavits, were downloaded,” stated the police.

Authorities are currently working diligently to ascertain the full extent of the compromise and identify the individuals or groups responsible for this cyber attack.  

Website Taken Offline Following the Incident

As a precautionary measure, the NSW Online Registry website has been temporarily taken offline. Visitors to the site are currently met with a “Http/1.1 Service Unavailable” error message. This shutdown aims to prevent any further unauthorized access and allow for thorough security checks and remediation.
