The German interior ministry has announced that Claudia Plattner, the European Central Bank’s Director General for Information Systems, will become the new head of the BSI (Federal Office for Information Security) starting July 1st, 2023.

Plattner, a trained mathematician, has been serving in her role at the ECB since 2021. She takes over a position that has been vacant since October 2022, when the previous head, Arne Schoenbohm, was fired following media allegations of possible Russia ties.

The investigation into Schoenbohm’s conduct revealed the need for an experienced and highly qualified professional to lead the country’s cybersecurity efforts.

Plattner’s appointment comes at a time when cyber threats are on the rise, making her expertise in the field of information security all the more critical.
